December 2006

Where it all started...

Paul and Donna Burgess are the sole founders and owners of Mud, Sweat and Gears / Vicious Cycle and Snow.

Paul has direct day to day involvement with the operations of the business as a whole.  Paul started working in the bike industry in 1985 for a small shop in Brandon, Manitoba learning how to build bikes.   In 1990 a home based business was started under the name "Sherwood Bike Repair Ltd", and over the next 16 years Paul slowly built the business to the point it needed to expand into a retail location.

In 2006, "Mud, Sweat and Gears" was formed and began operations that fall, with Winter retail consisting of Skis and Snowboard sales and service and then Summer Bicycle Retail and Service.

Spruce Grove

In 2013, Paul acquired "Bullseye Bikes" in Spruce Grove and opened a second location of Mud, Sweat and Gears.

We opened up our Spruce Grove location in August 2013 at 124 1st Ave East! We saw a need for a bike/skate/snow store and we decided to take a leap of faith. We sell premium bikes from Santa Cruz, Transition, Pivot and Evil Bikes, cruisers from Electra, and our amazing Canadian brands like Kona, Norco, and Rocky Mountain. We have all the mountain bikes you need. We have bikes for the whole family, kids too!
The Spruce Grove community has been incredibly supportive and we feel like we fit in quite well. All the locals have been extremely welcoming and we’re looking forward to doing business with as many of them as we can. We offer a full service winter sports store between October and May. We carry Snowboards and Skis as well as outerwear and all the accessories you’ll need to hit the slopes.

2016 saw the addition of the Red Deer location

Cyclists, Skiers and Snowboards share common interests, enjoying the outdoors and escaping the daily grind to challenge ourselves and our equipment on our great network of local trails and our nearby mountains. The Big City! Edmonton West

Edmonton West

2018 saw the addition of the Edmonton West location.
In March 2018 we took a leap to the big city. After years of
circling the greater Edmonton area, we dove in and planted roots in the
community of Jasper Gates on the west end of downtown Edmonton.

With the backing of our great brands, we brought our own
flavor of bike shop (small size, big service). With the amazing support of the Edmonton
biking communities, this proved to be one of our greatest successes. We proved
that our smaller, customer focused bike shops could do great things for the ridership
in Edmonton.

We have a great crew, a great work ethic and look forward to
seeing you in the store, whatever your needs are.

Early 2020

Covid

With the pandemic in early 2020, there were many challenges initially that threatened the survival of the business but the subsequent bike boom had many lasting benefits for the overall operation.

March 2021

Calgary Trail

In 2021 the Edmonton South location was opened and in 2022 the original Sherwood Park location was moved to a larger retail location.

Edmonton South

With the success of the West Edmonton store, we decided to further our endeavors into the cycling communities of Edmonton by opening up
our newest location on the south side.
This time, we wanted to up our game, and took a former fine dining location and overhaul it to what you see today.

The result, another convenient location for Edmonton riders to shop for and service their bikes. We pride ourselves on our staff and the service we provide.

Vicious Cycle and Snow

The winter of 2022 saw the purchase of Vicious Cycle in Hinton and Jasper and by Spring of 2023 there was a brand new location in St. Albert for Vicious Cycle.   This brought the total retail locations to 8.

The Warehouse

The winter of 2024 saw the purchase of a large warehouse to help support the retail locations and is also home to the online management of the overall operation.

In the spring of 2025, the largest retail location was opened in St. Albert after moving out of the initial Vicious Cycle location.

We are proud to service Northern Alberta with the current 8 locations that are home to over 85 staff.
Our expansion could not have been done without the many long term staff we have that truly have become extended family to Donna and Paul. Their passion and dedication to innovation within the industry and business have been the secret sauce to our success.
